DJ for a Night

The responsibility to make the ultimate mix has agreeably fallen into my lap, but it might prove to be tricky for a number of reasons, as a blend of music often can be. John Cusack's character in High Fidelity knows what I'm talking about here:

The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules.

And I'm calling on you, the general public, to help me hatch the ultimate mix, taking into consideration a few of these things:
  • The "dance-ability" of the songs, whether fast or slow
  • An audience with a very wide age-range
  • Class (no line-dancing suggestions...I'm even a little loathe to include "Shout.")
Many of my selections are Motown or Soul oriented, but the ultimate mix is *not* limited to these. Just keep that in mind when thinking about the flow.

I'm a big fan of motown, jazz, and funk. I think you should sprinkle in some Marvin Gaye, Al Green, P Funk, B. Holiday (to cool things down), and perhaps some Earth Wind and Fire. Oh, and don't forget the godfather of soul himself, Mr. James Brown.

I think you should include some house music when things are on fire. Davina, Lil Louis, or Marshall Jefferson for example. After some rythms to get people dancing, you HAVE to throw down Donna Summer's "Love to Love You", it's like a balm after some beats, they'll love it. Take it easy and good luck

  3. Check, check, check, check, and check. I got Aretha, Ray Charles, and Van Morrison too. Keep 'em coming if you can think of any more.
