Sketch Experiments, Stupid Projects, & Shpilkes

I recently started a new temp job (on top of the photography internship) with a department I quite like. The most succinct description I can give of everyone in the place is smart, funny, open-minded, and drama-free. Sure beats that other department that had a sit-down talk with me because I was using different colored paper clips. Seriously, guys. Hire me already.

Anyhow, I work with the very funny Liz, and this interesting guy, Matt (I especially like his look at robots inside furry toys and his redesign of the States).

How lucky am I?

Happy St. Patrick's Day

I thought St. Patty's Day was this past Saturday. Turns out it was Monday. So what difference does it make if I put this post up now?

The only problem? I'm missing one other picture and I need your suggestions. For those of you who don't know the routine, I've somewhat accidentally started a series called "Renaissance."

It started with this post. Italian Renaissance portraits seem to especially have all sorts of characters, making all sorts of gangsta gestures so it's been fun to look at the "rebirth" that's happened in our culture today. Seriously...I think I could write a dissertation on it. And, hey, I know St. Valentine and now St. Patrick aren't technically from the Renaissance era, but they still have some gestures that have had a rebirth.

So if anyone comes across any gangstas who mirror Pat up there--say, holding their "greenery," pimp stick, and happen to be wearing a hood, send it my way. I've been searching and I just KNOW there's a picture for Pat in this series.

Etch A Sketch Art

Probably the most fascinating thing about Etch A Sketch Art is the comfort level that these people have spending hours upon hours working on a sketch, and then erasing it into oblivion...well...almost. Lucky for us, etchasketchist documents his babies and THEN kills them.

About his work etchasketchist says:
I think of an image or subject I want to do, I google that thing, i find the best reference image on Google Image search, then I just dig in and draw it. I don't do any pre-drawing on paper. Just straight from the computer screen to the etch.
This just might be the greenest way of making art.

Burst of Rays Tutorial

I keep telling myself that I'm going to make a masthead for the blog, but am always seemingly drowning under files and files of photos. Well it's time I delved into photoshop a little deeper and I've started with this nifty tutorial on creating a burst of rays from Dr. Photoshop. The result:

Intro to Black and White Photography: Day 1

Making friends with the enlarger. I forget what the head dude called this type of image. I swear he said a pictogram, but that's not right. This is what's called a photogram. Gives you a basic idea of how light from the enlarger works with photographic paper.
